Did anyone else out there teach themselves to read with comic books?

I looked at the framed seqence of pictures, and was able to halfway understand the chain of the story. With some help from other kids, not teachers, I slowly began to read. I also noticed that some kids had to speak as they read, I believe I did to. There was a kid that had an orange crate stand on blake avenue, Brooklyn, where he w3ould either trade or sell used comic books, captain Marvel, Batman, Capt. America. They sold for 10 cents and he charged a nickle, second hand material still in good condition went for half price.
